A queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. That number is fixed, it's been the same for decades, and almost every sheet sold as "queen" is cut to fit it.
So why do so many queen sets fit badly?
Because width and length are only two of the three measurements that matter, and because "queen" turns out to be a family of sizes rather than a single one. Here's what actually fits.
The standard queen: 60" × 80"
This is the one you almost certainly own. It's the most popular mattress size in the United States by a wide margin, and it's what every set in our queen sheets collection is cut for.
A queen fitted sheet should measure 60 × 80 across the sleeping surface, plus enough fabric down each side to wrap the depth of your mattress and tuck underneath. That last part is where most fitted sheets fail, and we'll come back to it.
The queens that aren't 60" × 80"
If your sheets have never fit properly, check whether you actually have one of these:

RV short queen is the one that catches people out most often. It's the same width as a standard queen but five or six inches shorter, which means a standard queen fitted sheet will look almost right and then bag at the foot of the bed. Olympic queen is genuinely uncommon, but if you inherited a mattress or bought secondhand, it's worth measuring rather than assuming.
The measurement everyone forgets: depth
Mattresses have got thicker. A bed from twenty years ago might be eight or nine inches deep. A pillow-top or a memory foam mattress with a topper can easily reach fifteen or sixteen.
A fitted sheet cut for a nine-inch mattress will physically stretch onto a fourteen-inch one — and then pop off a corner in the night, every night, until you stop using it.
Measure from the top surface of your mattress straight down to where it meets the base. Include any topper you sleep on, because the sheet has to go over that too. What comes in a queen set
Our 4-piece queen set is a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two pillowcases. Queen and standard pillowcases are the same size, which is convenient — a queen set's pillowcases will fit standard pillows and vice versa.
If you only need to replace part of a set, you don't have to buy the whole thing. We sell the fitted sheet, the flat sheet and pillowcases separately, because the fitted sheet almost always wears out first.
A note on thread count
You'll see queen sets advertised at 400, 600, 1000 thread count. Ours doesn't have one, and that isn't evasion — jersey is knitted rather than woven. It's interlocking loops of a single continuous yarn instead of threads crossing in a grid, the same construction as a good cotton t-shirt. Thread count measures something that isn't there.
What it means practically is that jersey is soft on the first night rather than after twenty washes, and it doesn't hold a crease, so it never needs ironing. If you want the longer version, we went into it in the definitive guide to cotton jersey knit sheets.
Before you buy
- Measure the mattress rather than trusting the label, especially if it came with the house or the camper.
- Measure the depth, including any topper.
- Check the pocket depth on the sheets, not just the width and length.
- Buy a spare fitted sheet if you only want one extra thing — it's the piece that wears out.
Questions we get asked
Will queen sheets fit a full mattress?
No. A full is 54" × 75", six inches narrower and five shorter. The fitted sheet will slide off.
Are queen and standard pillowcases the same?
Yes. Both are around 20" × 30". King pillowcases are longer, at roughly 20" × 40".
How do I stop a fitted sheet coming off in the night?
Nine times out of ten it's pocket depth, not elastic. If the sheet is fighting to reach the underside of the mattress, it will lose. Measure the depth and match it.
What if my mattress is deeper than 16 inches?
You're in extra-deep territory and will need sheets specifically cut for it. Ours stop at 16.
