Deep pocket sheets exist because mattresses got thicker and sheet sizing didn't keep up.
A bed from the 1990s was often eight or nine inches deep. Today a pillow-top with a memory foam topper can reach sixteen. The sheets on the shelf next to it are frequently still cut for the old bed — which is why a sheet can be exactly the right width and length and still come off the corner every single night.
Here's how to work out what you actually need, in about two minutes.
Measure the mattress, not the box it came in
Take a tape measure to the side of your bed. Measure from the top sleeping surface straight down to where the mattress meets the frame or base.
Include anything you sleep on top of. A two-inch memory foam topper turns a twelve-inch mattress into a fourteen-inch one as far as the sheet is concerned. A mattress protector adds a little too, though usually under half an inch.
Don't measure the frame, the box spring or the bed base. Only the part the sheet has to wrap.
What the numbers mean
| Depth | Usually called | Typical beds |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 12" | Standard pocket | Older mattresses, basic foam, guest beds |
| 13" – 16" | Deep pocket | Most mattresses sold today, pillow-tops, anything with a topper |
| 17" and over | Extra deep | Luxury pillow-tops, stacked toppers, some hybrids |
Our deep pocket sheets are cut to fit mattresses up to 16 inches, which covers the large majority of beds in use — including most setups with a topper on them.
What goes wrong when the pocket is too shallow
The sheet stretches on. It looks fine when you make the bed. Then the elastic spends all night under tension it wasn't designed for, and at some point a corner gives.
People usually blame the elastic and buy sheet clips or suspenders. Those help a bit, but they're treating a symptom. If a sheet has to travel fourteen inches down a side it was cut to travel ten, the corner has almost nothing left to grip underneath — and there's no amount of elastic that fixes a fabric shortfall.
It also wears the sheet out faster. Fabric held under constant tension abrades at the corners and thins long before the rest of the sheet does.
What goes wrong when the pocket is too deep
Less dramatic, but not nothing. A 16-inch sheet on a 9-inch mattress leaves a lot of slack tucked underneath, and that slack tends to work its way out and gather in ridges across the sleeping surface.
If your mattress is genuinely shallow, a standard pocket will sit flatter. But given the choice between slightly too deep and slightly too shallow, too deep wins every time — you can live with a bit of gathering, and you can't live with a sheet that unclips at 3am.
Depth isn't the only thing to check
Width and length still have to match your mattress size. A deep pocket queen sheet fits a 60" × 80" mattress that happens to be thick — it won't fit a king, however deep the pockets are.
If you're not certain what size you've got, we laid out the full set of US mattress dimensions in the total guide to choosing the right bed sheet size. And if your queen sheets have never quite fitted, it's worth checking whether you have an RV short queen, which is five inches shorter than a standard one.
Why jersey handles depth better
Woven sheets have a fixed amount of give — essentially none along the grain. Knitted fabric stretches in both directions, which is why a jersey fitted sheet can accommodate a range of depths rather than one exact number.
It's the same reason a cotton t-shirt fits a range of bodies and a woven shirt fits one. Our fitted sheets are 100% Turkish cotton jersey for exactly this reason, and they're OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
Questions we get asked
Do I measure with the topper on or off?
On. The sheet goes over both, so both count.
Will a deep pocket sheet work on a thin mattress?
Yes, with some extra fabric tucked underneath. It's a compromise rather than a problem.
My sheet fits but the corners keep popping. Is that the elastic?
Usually it's depth. Measure before you replace anything — if the mattress is deeper than the sheet's rated pocket, no elastic will hold it.
Does a mattress protector count toward depth?
Slightly. Most add under half an inch, which won't change your category unless you're right on a boundary.
What if I'm over 16 inches?
You'll need sheets sold specifically as extra deep. Ours are cut to 16.
