"Warmest" sounds like it should have one answer. It doesn't — because warmth in a blanket comes from two different things, and materials are good at different ones.

Insulation is a material's ability to trap air. Trapped air is what actually keeps you warm; the fiber itself is just scaffolding holding air in place. Breathability is whether moisture can escape. A blanket that insulates brilliantly but traps moisture will leave you clammy and, eventually, cold.

A practical winter build:

  1. Cotton sheets against your skin — breathable, moisture-managing, the layer that prevents the sweat-then-chill cycle
  2. A duvet or comforter — the primary insulating layer
  3. A fleece throw over the top — added warmth you can kick off at 2am without disturbing the rest
